Reddit lost most of its visibility in ChatGPT, and the site parameter filled the gap

For months, Reddit was a fixture in ChatGPT answers

Through early August, Reddit held a steady 4.4 to 4.6 percent of all ChatGPT citations in the queries we track. Roughly one in every 22 sources ChatGPT cited was a Reddit thread. Then, in the space of two weeks, that share collapsed.

The fall happened in two steps

This was not a slow fade. Reddit's citation share dropped in two clean steps. On August 8 it fell from 4.6 percent to around 3 percent. On August 14 it fell off a cliff, from 3.2 percent to 0.55 percent in a single day. By August 21 it sat at 0.23 percent, a 95 percent drop from its early August level.

At the same time, a new search behavior exploded

When ChatGPT answers a question, it runs its own web searches in the background. The site: parameter in one of those searches means ChatGPT is not searching the open web. It is telling the search index to only return pages from one specific domain.

For months this behavior barely existed. From mid May to late July, fewer than 0.11 percent of ChatGPT queries used the site: parameter in any given week. In the week of August 3 that number jumped to 10.2 percent. In the week of August 10 it hit 26.2 percent. That week, 3.9 million of the 14.9 million ChatGPT queries we observed carried a site: parameter.

One month, two behavior changes

Put the two lines together and the timing gets interesting. The site: surge and the first Reddit dip landed on the same day, August 8. The second Reddit drop came on August 14, while site: usage stayed flat. So this was not one switch being flipped. It looks like two separate changes to how ChatGPT retrieves content, landing in the same month, and both pointing the same way. Broad searches that used to surface Reddit threads gave way to narrow searches aimed at chosen domains.

A note on reading this. These are observations, not a verdict. ChatGPT changed its retrieval behavior twice in three weeks, without any announcement, and it can change again just as quickly. Reddit's share could recover next week. Everything in this post describes what we see in the data today, not a permanent new state.

What appears to have taken Reddit's place

Not another forum, at least in the data so far. When ChatGPT adds the site: parameter to a search, it names the exact domain it wants an answer from. In our tracked fanouts, those targets are overwhelmingly official sources: brand websites, product documentation, help centers, and review platforms. Reddit is almost never the target. Fewer than 1 percent of the site: parameter queries we analyzed point at reddit.com .

In other words, ChatGPT does not seem to have swapped Reddit for a Reddit lookalike. It appears to have swapped broad, crowd sourced search results for direct lookups on domains it decides to trust. The model picks the source first, then searches inside it. Maybe it's another sign for OpenAI's own cache index? I don't know.

What this means for your brand

  • Your own domain matters more than it did a month ago

When ChatGPT points a search at one specific domain, the brands with clear, crawlable, well structured pages on their own domain win the citation. There is no Reddit thread to carry you.

  • A Reddit first strategy looks weaker in ChatGPT right now

If a meaningful share of your AI visibility came from Reddit threads, that channel shrank by 95 percent in two weeks, at least for now. Check your citation mix and see how exposed you were.

  • Retrieval behavior can change overnight, so measure it continuously

ChatGPT changed how it searches twice in one month, with no announcement. The brands that saw it first were the ones watching their citation data daily.

This picture can change again

Treat these numbers as a snapshot, not a rule. They cover a three week window in one AI channel, and retrieval behavior sits fully in OpenAI's hands. site: usage may keep growing, level off, or fade as quickly as it arrived, and Reddit's citation share may recover. We will keep watching the data and share what changes.
